This AI has questions about your sex life

Couples with sexual problems are the least likely to talk about sex, according to research and clinical data. A new AI-powered bot is helping to change that because couples who do talk about sex are more likely to experience greater sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, less pain, and better erectile function, a 2019 meta-analysis found.

“Sexual communication is critical to the development and maintenance of healthy sexual function (Masters & Johnson, 1970). Research demonstrates that couples with sexual difficulties have more sexual communication problems than couples without sexual concerns (e.g., Kelly, Strassberg, & Turner, 2006), and, relatedly, couples with sexual problems who express dissatisfaction with their sexual relationships are likely to report a lack of communication and poor sexual expression (e.g., Pazmany, Bergeron, Verhaeghe, Van Oudenhove, & Enzlin, 2015). It may be that sexual problems make communication more challenging. However, the reverse could also be true; couples that have trouble speaking openly about their concerns, both sexual and non-sexual, may be more likely to develop sexual difficulties. Either way, it is likely that sexual function and sexual satisfaction are both directly impacted by sexual self-disclosure, which may protect against future sexual dysfunction (Reese et al., 2014) and ultimately enhance future communication,” NIH reports.

The nonprofit PAIRS Foundation has been helping couples have conversations about every aspect of relationship for nearly half a century. Today, PAIRS is releasing an AI-powered App that invites men and women to talk about their sexual desires with a bot named Yodi.

PAIRS CEO Seth Eisenberg said Yodi has helped more than 200,000 people since beginning to offer PAIRS exercises through a free App late last year. This week, Eisenberg said Yodi learned to help users have conversations about sex.

I tried out the new App and found myself fascinated with the conversation.

“Is your sexual arousal more physical, mental, emotional, or a combination,” Yodi asked me.

“How do you feel when you have not made love for days,” the bot asked later in our conversation.

It may take getting used to having such personal conversations with an AI-powered bot, but there’s a good chance practicing with Yodi will people ultimately have those same conversations with their actual partners. That’s a good thing.
